To ensure the liners are safe to be used in their composting scheme, councils require the material to be tested to a specific European standard. The green hexagonal image above is the European Certificate of Compostability EN13432:2000 issued by Din Certo - the leading European certification organisation. This award is given after rigorous testing on the material to ensure the material composts properly, is safe to use in the composting process and will not harm the environment.

Our products are tailored to fit the bins supplied by most councils, and are fully approved by MK Council for use in their recycling service.  Please check with your local council to ensure compatibility with their recycling scheme.

In the garden

As well as being suitable for council food waste collections, these compostable liners are ideal for use in your home compost bin.  For home composting empty the contents on to the heap and rip up the liner before also adding it to the heap - adding the paper liner will provide valuable 'browns' to the mix, helping to stabilise moisture content and improve air flow.

Some handy hints to get the best from your caddy liners

The paper liner is designed to be taller than your caddy so that once the bag is full there is enough paper left to fold the top over and seal the contents inside.  Try folding the top over by about 5cm / 2”, which also helps to hold the liner open wide for ease of use.

The liners have great wet strength and will contain food even when the paper is wet. However, being made of paper they are not totally watertight, so it is normal for some moisture to collect in the bottom of the caddy if the same liner is left in for several days, as the food starts to compost.

Try to manage the mix of food waste that goes into the caddy liner, some stale bread makes a good base material to absorb any wet food and help prevent moisture forming in the base of the caddy. You can also include food-soiled paper or card, including kitchen towel or used paper napkins to help balance the moisture content.  Wrap particularly soggy food waste in some extra newspaper or kitchen towel to help your paper liner stay dry for longer.

Do not place hot tea bags or hot food straight into the liners as this will cause excess condensation. Why not keep a small bowl by your kettle to collect tea bags throughout the day, allowing them to cool down before placing in the liner.

Should I choose Premium or Value caddy liners?

This photo shows our Alina brand Premium 5-7 Litre Caddy Liner and the Value Caddy Liner side by side, showing the difference in their base construction.

The block bottom of the Premium liner makes the base extra strong and rigid and is made to fit snugly into a 5-7 litre caddy.  The rolled base of the Value liner is more suitable if you change your liner daily, offering a less tailored fit, but all the wet strength of Alina’s compostable paper.
